Why do my photos appear sideways?

Phones embed orientation data in EXIF, but not all software respects it. Rotating the image and saving it bakes in the correct orientation.

What's the difference between rotate and flip?

Rotation turns the image around its center (90° = quarter turn). Flipping mirrors the image (horizontal flip = left-right mirror, vertical flip = top-bottom mirror).
