Frequently asked questions

What's the best quality setting for JPG?

For most photos, a quality of 75-85 produces excellent results with 50-70% file size reduction. For sharing online, 70-80 is the sweet spot.

What is chroma subsampling?

Chroma subsampling reduces color detail (chroma) while preserving brightness (luma). 4:2:0 is the standard for web and gives smaller files with imperceptible quality loss. 4:4:4 preserves all color data for highest quality.

Will JPG compression lose quality?

JPG is a lossy format by design. Each save reduces quality slightly. However, our MozJPEG encoder produces better-looking JPGs at the same file size compared to standard encoders.
